Command and Conquer Red Alert 3 Preview

The long and painful wait to find out if there would ever be a Red Alert 3 was finally put to an end when EA officially announced that Command and Conquer: Red Alert 3 was in its early development stages. Electronic Arts were quick to confirm that Red Alert 3 would be released on PC, Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 later this year. The previous title, Command and Conquer: Red Alert 2 is one of the most successful strategy games ever created, it had all you could possibly want from a real-time strategy game, it was beautifully-balanced, fast, colourful, exciting, visually perfect and featured some awesome units. Sadly, Red Alert 2 looks terribly aged today after its release back in 2000. It’s time for the next instalment of the series – Red Alert 3.

At the beginning of Red Alert 3, the situation for the Soviets is bad – the Allies have driven their forces to Moscow and the leadership is cowering behind the gates of the kremlin.

In desperation, the Soviets head to the basement where they have been working on a time machine which they plan to use to go back in time and get rid of Einstein – the man who was responsible for the technological achievements that have led to the Allies victories. The soviets erase Einstein and come back to the present day where it looks like the experiment has been a great success – the Allies have retreated and the Red Menace has returned to its former glory. However, almost immediately, Klaxons begin blaring and the Russians are again under attack, except this time from a superpower their meddling has spawned upon the word stage: the technological cult of the Empire of the Rising Sun. A sickening feeling hits the Soviet commanders’ stomachs as they raise that they’ve created a new enemy for themselves, the new war begins...

Gameplay will involve the traditional ground war, naval war and air war units. Red Alert 3 will include a finely tuned story-driven campaign that you can play in both single-player and online co-op – every mission has been designed with you and a team mate in mind. Lots of new units will be available including a mirage tank, bullfrog, Kirov and of course you’re starting portable HQ, the construction yard, which will be constructible on land and in the oceans, leaving players in suspense, resulting in the player carefully deciding whether to build ground, naval, or air units. The ocean will also hold one of the most important things, resources, which is basically the stuff you collect to buy units with – this is another new feature not seen in previous Command and Conquer games.

The rush tactics used by many gamers in Red Alert 2 are not likely to work in Red Alert 3, EA want gameplay to be slowed down making it near impossible for rush tactics to work. Games will still be quick, but instead of matched multiplayer games lasting 10 minutes, Red Alert 3 will have matches of between 20-30 minutes. Most online multiplayer games will require you to discuss tactics with your team-mate(s) in order for you to successfully beat your oppositions. Using a headset will be the way to communicate with fellow team-mates in Red Alert 3, along with the older text communication for the PC platform.
A brand new graphics engine will ensure that gameplay takes place in lush 3D environments. The high-definition video clips displayed at the start of every mission look superb. All units have really detailed animations including the dogs, which stop and scratch themselves when resting, and the hilarious unit voices, which were very much a feature in Red Alert 2.

If you’re a fan of the Red Alert series, you’d better relax, these early signs look really exciting.
